All of the ethics rules are being restructured and redrafted. They will be put together around a conceptual framework. Although the changes are in the distant future, efforts to rewrite the code are underway right now. It would be wise for us to start paying attention.

A good place to start is an article in the June 2011 Journal of Accountancy.

Improving the Code of Professional Conduct

Here is a two sentence recap from the article:

The Ethics Codification Project’s primary focus is to improve the AICPA Code of Professional Conduct so that members and others can apply the rules and reach correct conclusions more easily. To achieve this, PEEC will restructure the Code into topical areas, edit the Code using consistent drafting and style conventions, and revise certain Code provisions (primarily independence) to reflect the “conceptual framework” approach.
